An overview on Software Components of a PC
Many people think of a PC as comprising solely physical hardware, but hardware is just a useless pile of silicon, metal, and plastic unless you have software to make it do something. Software is a set of detailed instructions that allow a computer to perform a task or group of tasks. Software is usually categorized as being one of three types:
Applications programs-
Applications programs are what most people think of when they hear the word software. These programs are designed to perform specific user-oriented tasks, such as creating a word processing document or spreadsheet, browsing the Web, reading and replying to email, managing your schedule, creating a presentation, or recovering a deleted file. Hundreds of thousands of applications programs are available, from comprehensive office suites such as Microsoft Office, to vertical market packages such as medical office billing software, to single-purpose utilities such as WinZip. Whatever you might want a computer to do for you, you can probably locate applications software that will do it.
- Operating system
-
An operating system is software that manages the PC itself, providing such basic functions as the ability to write and read data from a disk or to display images on the monitor. A PC can run any of dozens of operating systems, including DOS, Windows 95/98/98SE/Me, Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Linux and other Unix variants, NetWare, BeOS, and many others. The operating system you use determines which applications programs you can run, which peripherals you can use (not all operating systems support all peripherals), which technologies are available to you ( e.g., NT does not support Plug and Play or USB), and how reliable the system is. The vast majority of PCs run Windows 9X/2000/XP or Linux.
- Device drivers
- We said that the operating system determines which peripherals you can use. That's true, but only indirectly. Operating systems themselves natively recognize only the most basic, standardized system components—things like memory, the system clock, and so on. Device drivers are small programs that work at a very low level to integrate support for other devices into the operating system. Using device drivers allows an operating system to be extensible, which means that support for new devices can be added incrementally, without updating the operating system itself. For example, if you install a new video card, installing a device driver for that video card allows the operating system to recognize it and use its full capabilities. Most operating systems include "vanilla" device drivers that allow devices to be used at less than their full capabilities ( e.g., the standard VGA driver in Windows) until an appropriate driver can be installed. Most operating systems also include specific device-driver support for common devices, such as popular video cards and printers, but these drivers are often old and slow, and do not take full advantage of hardware capabilities. In general, you should download the most recent device driver from the hardware manufacturer when you install new hardware.

WebDrive 7.20.1551
WebDrive integrates WebDAV, FTP, or SFTP servers into the Windows desktop by mapping them to a network drive letter. Files are transferred by simply saving them to a drive letter - there's no need to run a separate FTP/SFTP client. WebDrive instantly web-enables any Windows application by providing the ability for these applications to directly open files on web servers. WebDrive can connect to WebDAV, FTP, SFTP(*), and HTTP servers supporting Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions. WebDrive has built-in support for the industry standard SSL protocol. When used in conjunction with secure web servers, WebDrive will open an encrypted tunnel between the client computer and the remote server; giving you secure transmission of critical data over the Internet. WebDrive can even be used as an alternative to a corporate VPN. Install the WebDrive client, and an SSL enabled server, and WebDrive can act as the VPN for your company, an efficient alternative to an expensive VPN. WebDrive supports WebDAV, the new Web-based Distributed Authoring and Versioning protocol built on HTTP standards. By mapping a drive letter to any WebDAV compliant Web server, WebDrive will allow you to lock files, modify them, then release the locks so that others can review and update the files. By using WebDAV locking concepts, WebDrive clients ensure data integrity.

How Do I Send Pictures via Email
One of the first things that new digital camera owners love to do is send a batch of images to family members or friends. As you may have already discovered yourself, the warmth of reception is inversely proportional to the size of the images that land in your recipients' inboxes.
All too often, budding photographers send full-sized 2-, 4-, or even 6-megapixel pictures as email attachments. Unfortunately, these files take forever to download on all but the fastest Internet connections and are too large to view comfortably on a computer monitor.
Indeed, you should shoot at your camera's highest resolution, but remember not to send those full-sized images to others. All parties concerned will be much happier if you create much smaller "email versions" of your pictures and send those along. This technique is called sampling down. Here'show it works:
- Use your image editor to resize a copy of the image for easier handling. To do so, use the "Save As…" command in your image editor. The largest size you should send as an email attachment is 800 x 600 pixels, and 640 x 480 pixels will usually do the job.
- If you're lucky enough to have Photoshop (or Photo shop Elements) as your image editor, use the Image Size function to resize the picture. (Other image editors have similar functions.) When you first open the Image Size dialog box, you'll see the current width and height of the picture. In the settings, those dimensions are 2272 pixels wide by 1704 pixels tall. This shot was taken at full resolution with a 4-megapixel camera. If you sent this picture as-is, the file size would be well over 1 MB even after compression, and a full 11 MB when opened. That's not the kind of attachment you want to send to friends and family.
- Use this dialog box to reduce the width and height settings to 640 x 480 pixels (or thereabouts). In the above example, these changes shrank the compressed file size to under 300 KB—just a fraction of the size of the original image!
- Make sure you have both the "Constrain Proportions" and "Resample Image" boxes checked when preparing image copies for email. With the "Constrain Proportions" box checked, Photoshop will automatically change the height dimension for you when you change the width. Photoshop users can also take advantage of the Bicubic Sharper algorithm, which you can select from the drop-down list next to "Resample Image." Since sampling down sometimes "softens" your pictures slightly, many photographers feel the need to sharpen the images after resampling. You won't need to use that two-step process if you select Bicubic Sharper—Photoshop will resample and sharpen for you in one step
"Resampling" is probably one of those words you've heard before but don't quite understand the meaning of In simplest terms, resampling means that the image editor is either adding pixels to the image or subtracting pixels from the image
If you have a choice, the best image format to use for email attachments is JPEG (.jpg). When you save in this format, your computer will usually ask you which level of compression you want to use. Generally speaking, medium or high gives you the quality you need.
Remember to keep your original image safe and sound so you can use it later for printing and large display. To help eliminate confusion when dealing with these different sizes, you might want to save two copies, calling the original something like vacation one hires.jpg and the more compact version vacation one lores.jpg ("hires" being short for high resolution and "lores" denoting lower resolution).
If you send friends and family smaller, more manageable pictures, you'll hear more about how beautiful your shots are and less about how long the darn things took to download.

How To Work with RAW Files
Images captured in RAW format, on the other hand, are not complete when you transfer them to your workstation This process is more like taking a negative into a darkroom, where you can adjust the white balance and exposure until you get the perfect image
One of the battle cries of this book is "Good data in; good data out." The better you capture your shot, the easier it will be to produce high-quality output. Shooting in RAW mode means you can delay some difficult decisions until you're in the comfort of your own home, working at your computer.
A good example is determining the correct white balance, which is often difficult at the moment of exposure (especially under fluorescent or mixed lighting). When you shoot in JPEG mode, you have to make an immediate decision, and if you're wrong, you have to figure out how to correct it later.
In RAW mode, it doesn't make as much difference which white balance setting you select when you shoot the picture. The camera just records the "raw" data and lets you fine-tune the color later, on your computer. You can apply different color temperatures to the image, compare the results, and then have the computer apply one that you like without any compromise to image quality. It's just like choosing a white balance setting at the time of exposure (only better, because you're looking at a 17" monitor, not a 2" LCD screen!).
If your camera has the ability to shoot in RAW format, it will include software to work with these images. Photoshop users can also work with RAW files right in Photoshop. Visit the Adobe site ( http://www.adobe.com) for more information.
No matter which software you use, this method is as close as you can come to a true digital darkroom, and it provides you with maximum flexibility for processing your images Shooting RAW images requires more work and processing time later, at the computer
Which is best for you? A common-sense approach would be to capture images at the highest JPEG setting for your "everyday" shooting, and take advantage of the RAW format for difficult lighting situations, or when you want to squeeze every drop of quality out of your picture-taking process.

Lyrics Plugin
Good things are simple and come in small packages. If you wanted a plugin for your music player that finds and displays lyrics for your songs, Lyrics Plugin is a good answer. It's free, small (around 60 KB) and available for Winamp and Windows Media Player. You don't have to configure anything, the plugin works well out of the box.
The drawback of this plugin is that the lyrics database is not very big, so you may still find famous songs that don't have lyrics. But it's easy to add them.

Don't Pay For Virus Protection, Get these Free Anti Virus Software
While viruses remain a threat to our precious data, you need not necessarily invest in expensive antivirus scanners - there are plenty of free options available that may give even some commercial vendors a run for their money.
We look at some of the best software available today for keeping your computer free of viruses and other malware. Later we help you decide the one most suitable for you.
Free Online Virus Scanners [run inside the web browser to scan your hard drive]
Trend Micro HouseCall - An online virus scanner that's absolutely free and scans your PC hard drive for any sort of viruses or even spyware. HouseCall allows you to remove detected infections. Works with Firefox and IE. Requires Java.
McAfee Freescan - This free virus scanner from McAfee is based on the McAfee VirusScan engine. Should viruses be found, FreeScan prepares a list of infected files and links to information about the viruses on your computer. It also gives you an option to clean your system. Requires IE with ActiveX.
Windows Live OneCare Scanner - A free antivirus online scanner from Microsoft that cleans your system from viruses and also recommends ways to improve the overall performance. Part of Windows Onecare.
Symantec Internet Security - An online virus scanner from the developers of Norton Antivirus 2007 can detect most virus threat but there is no option to delete the virus infected file or repair it. Does not examine compressed files. Requires IE with ActiveX.
BitDefender Online Scanner - Their Free Online Virus Scanner version 8 scans your system's memory, all files, folders and drives' boot sectors - the default options automatically cleans the infected files. Requires IE with ActiveX.
Free Anti Virus Software for Windows [Requires Installation]
Avast! Home Edition - One of the most popular antivirus software, can also be run from Explorer context menu. You can either scan the entire hard drive or selected folders. Ships with an Antivirus screen-saver.
AOL Active Virus - a free virus scanner from AOL based on Kaspersky Antivirus that doesn't require an AOL account to download the software. The software can be configure to check only new and modified files thereby reducing the memory requirements. Also support scanning of incoming and outgoing email messages.
ClamWin Virus Scanner - An opensource antivirus software that is great for running routine antivirus checks on your PC. You need to manually scan a file in order to detect a virus or spyware.
Conclusion: Which one should I choose ?
Unlike Desktop antivirus software, online virus scanners do not proactively protect your PC against new virus infections.
But if viruses have already entered your hard drive and taken control of your existing desktop scanner program, any of the above listed online virus-scanning services can save your day.
If you are a fairly experienced web user who doesn't need an antivirus software to run in the background 24 hours, scan you drive at regular intervals using HouseCall. Others may install the AOL antivirus software which uses the Kaspersky virus definitions database.

Ground-breaking Intel Core 2 Quad
It has been a couple of week since the new ground-breaking Intel processor Core 2 Quad was officially released and I just realised it's already in the market! Here are the two excerpts taken from TechSpot and Hexus.net.
Get more detail pictures, specifications and all the facts about this processor from the links below.
Currently, there are four Core 2 Duo processors which were released at the initial launch (E6300, E6400, E6600 and E6700). There is also the Core 2 Extreme processor dubbed the X6800, though it offers very little in the way of performance over the E6700. There is said to be four new Core 2 Duo processors on the way that will run on a 1333MHz FSB and will all feature the larger 4MB L2 Cache. They are the E6650, E6750, E6800 and E6850, though we are not here to discuss these processors today. Rather, we are here to examine the new Kentsfield micro-architecture which is based on a quad-core 65nm design.
Read more at TechSpot.
Intel's quad-core processor, codenamed Kentsfield, has been one of its least well kept secrets. In fact, benchmarks have been leaking out for months. Illicit samples obtained on the black market were the first to appear, then Intel itself gave more than just a sneak peek at its most recent Developer Forum. The numbers were already impressive back then, but at last the Core 2 Extreme QX6700 is finally here.
Read more at Hexus.net.
Eventhough the multi core era has begun, but very few applications that can really take advantage of this state-of-the-art processor. For those who have money, go and get it as it's a good investment for the future but I rather wait for some time until the price starts to settle down.

Spybot Search and Destroy Detection Update 10.27.2006
Spybot - Search and Destroy Updater will allow you to update your Spybot S&D detections without the need for the included WebUpdate.
Spybot - Search & Destroy can detect and remove spyware of different kinds from your computer. Spyware is a relatively new kind of threat that common anti-virus applications do not yet cover. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you didn't intentionally install, if your browser crashes, or if you browser start page has changed without your knowing, you most probably have spyware. But even if you don't see anything, you may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging that is silently tracking your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile of you that will be sold to advertisement companies.Spybot Search and Destroy is free, so there's no harm in trying to see if something snooped into your computer.

iPod -> Folder (Windows/Mac)
iPod -> Folder is a nice standout both for its simplicity and it's Windows and Mac versions. The downside is that iPod -> Folder doesn't allow you to selectively backup music, so it's an all-or-nothing affair. That said, this is a great little app to download and stick on your iPod so you can easily "back up" your music at any computer.
